Meet the Designer: Amy Singer!

Amy Singer is coming to Denver! Not only is Amy the editor of Knitty.com, but she is also the publisher and founder of the magazine. In 2002, she was daydreaming about an online magazine that would highlight all the knitting talent that had been popping up. Knitty.com is the perfect place! We are thrilled to host a class on May 10th where she will discuss the following: what makes a pattern stand out among the hundreds submitted to Knitty every year, what makes a good pattern, pattern-writing techniques that make a difference, what makes a pattern go viral, the five things you can do to ensure you have the best possible chance of being published, and the five things you can do that will blow it for you. Let's meet Amy!

1) How did you get started in the knitting industry? What is your background?

I was a proofreader in advertising, losing my mind with the boredom of proofing financial documents. So I decided that I would get some experience on my resume as an editor by starting my own magazine in 2002. I didn't realize the person that would eventually hire me was ME -- in 2006, when I finally got to hang up my red pen!

2)What are you most excited about knitting or spinning right now?

We're all really excited about craft crossover...when crochet bleeds into knitting which melds with quilting and embroidery and all gets wrapped up in photography. It's not just about one thing any more...every craft enhances and inspires the others.

3) You run one of the most successful online knitting publications that has been around for over 10 years. What are some current trends in knitting? Both in terms of patterns but also yarn?

Watching people like Clara Parkes and Jill Draper create beautiful, functional yarn from the sheep up is really exciting. Their passion for the finished product and knowledge of every aspect of yarn production shows in the skein.

4) What is your favorite mythological animal?

I wish I had a Panserbjorn. Everyone needs an Armoured Bear.

5) If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I wish I had a Tardis (but without the responsibilities of being the Doctor). My friends live all over the world. I would love to just pop in for tea when I missed them. Or pick them all up and take them to tea with Jane Austen. Denny and Jillian would love that!

Thread Theory are the duo of Matthew and Morgan Meredith from British Columbia, Canada and they design classic men's sewing patterns. Matthew and Morgan are on a US tour this month and we are thrilled to be a part of their tour! Thread Theory will be bringing sewn samples of their designs to view and patterns will be available for purchase. Come meet the makers, hang out and have some fun!

April Rhodes Meet n' Greet and Trunk Show

We ♥ April Rhodes and are so excited she will be coming to Denver! Ms. Rhodes' designs include the very popular Staple Dress, Date Night Dress, and Riding Peplum! We love them all. April will be bringing sewn samples of her patterns and we will have plenty of her patterns available for purchase. Anzula Trunk Show

Sabrina and the ladies of Anzula will be stopping by Fancy Tiger Crafts to sell you their yarn! They will have their full line of luscious yarns which feature unique blends of fibers like camel, silk, cashmere, linen and merino, all hand-dyed in small batches by their expert team in Fresno, CA. One-off skeins, knit samples, and hundreds of unique yarns mean you won't want to miss this event!

New Patterns: By Hand London

By Hand London is an independent sewing pattern label out of London run by three fabulous women, Charlotte, Elisalex and Victoria. They launched just over a year ago and are producing beautiful sewing patterns.

Being surrounded by stylish women offers these ladies a constant inspiration for new designs. Creating patterns influenced by, and named after the women they admire, they create charming patterns to cater to individual style. We are so happy to stock these patterns with a modern twist on classic designs.

Merchant & Mills

Merchant & Mills is a British haberdasher that makes beautiful sewing patterns, tools and more. We are pleased to welcome their products to our line-up at Fancy Tiger Crafts. Merchant and Mills patterns are really beautiful traditional garments. The detail in the instructions, pattern design, even the packaging makes for a wonderful presentation. Their focus is on classic, simple designs. You will find few fastenings and no unnecessary difficulty while working these patterns.

The Camber Set is a simple dress with tapered A-line silhouette and fitted sleeves for an easy-wear classic. This pattern provides two versions, a dress or t-shirt. 

The Dress Shirt is inspired by "Grandpa's shirt" and is a lightweight, versatile dress. This is a loose fitting comfortable dress for all your casual needs. 

The Top #64 is inspired by the fisherman's top with a little feminine flare to it. This top works well with fabrics in varying weight - do I see a heavy wool jumper in your future?

Thread Theory: Menswear Sewing Patterns

Thread Theory Inc. is a new sewing pattern company out of Vancouver, BC.  Run by couple, Morgan and Matt Meredith, this menswear specific company is providing the sewing world with inspiring fashion forward designs for men with easy to follow instructions. We couldn't be happier to carry this new line!

The Newcastle Cardigan is slim fitting with cozy long cuff sleeves. Pick your favorite knit and whip this up in no time! There are options provided for customizable details, like contrasting yoke and shoulder, shawl collar, and decorative stitching.

Jedediah Pants offers a slim fit chino-style pant with two length options. With spring around the corner we have some amazing cotton and linen in stock for a light weight trouser short!

The newest Fancy Tiger knitting pattern, Quandary Peak Mittens, is here!

Sunne, one of our amazing knitting instructors, designed these pretty stranded colorwork mittens. They aren't just pretty, they are tough. These nordic style mittens are made with our hearty Heirloom Romney yarn. Romney is a longwool whose lustrous locks make for hard-wearing mittens that will last through the most snow shoveling-est, sledding-est of winters.

Join us and welcome Jeane deCoster, of Elemental Affects, for a lecture on raising and milling heritage breed wool in the US. Jeane mills and dyes her own line of yarn from US herds of Shetland and Romney, and makes our Fancy Tiger Crafts Heirloom yarn.

Jeane will cover qualities of various breeds of wools and how to spin them to showcase their unique properties. Jeane will also cover best use for your new heritage handspuns.

Regardless of which hand you use to carry yarn when you knit, you'll learn how to use both hands in this class. Learn the basics of handling multiple colors, creating steeks, managing yarn tension, reading color charts and steeking.

Two new patterns are here from Colette!

Perfect for your fall/winter handmade wardrobe, the Anise pattern is a classic and ladylike double-breasted jacket with a cozy collar.

We think these wools would suit this pattern perfectly!

The Juniper pants have a wide leg and tailored hip--a classic fit for classy ladies!

We think the Essex cotton/linens, the hemp ticking or hemp denims would be lovely for Juniper.

Two new sewing pattern lines are here! Megan Neilsen Patterns and Sewaholic Patterns are both independently designed and published by adorable seamstresses who know a thing or two about stitching up modern and fun garments.

Megan Neilsen's eponymous line of sewing patterns features designs for hip expecting mothers and fashionable ladies. We've never seen such cute maternity patterns!

Sewaholic Patterns by Canadian seamstress Tasia caught our eye recently and we are happy to add these to our selection! We love the Renfrew top, a basic tee with several variations--we'd like to make it in every style!
