Craft up a Trend - Prairie Style

Living in Colorado, it's hard not to be influenced by the prairies and fields surrounding us. Farmlands and country life are all inspirations to us.

Home on the range...
Small calico floral prints and ticking fabrics are perfect to achieve a prairie style. Lace-up oxfords can help you complete your look. Prairie fashion has been seen on the runway and in the streets and is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. We have tons of patterns and supplies to achieve a country-prairie look. Here are some of our favorite fabrics, yarns and patterns.

Prairie Style Set
Prairie style is big in fashion now - here are some styles we collected on Polyvore

Nothing beats ticking as a reference of prairie style. This sturdy, tightly woven fabric kept the feathers from escaping homesteaders' feather stuffed pillows and beds. We have a lightweight ticking cloth available in 6 colors that make for modestly classic bags, aprons and even dresses.

Speaking of ticking, thanks to this great pattern from Cirilia Rose for Loft you can knit your own Ticking Cowl inspired by this workaday fabric.

Small floral prints will help you achieve a prairie look. We'd love to see the Ceylon by Colette in one of these sweet little calicos.

A bandanda shawl would be great to accessorize your new wardrobe - perhaps this pattern from Hill Country Weavers in the rustically wonderful Acadia from Fibre Co?

Be sure to finish your garments and accessories with a natural cotton lace trim.

We have no shortage of pioneer inspired patterns, from quilts to cute dresses, your style can be handcrafted-down-home-prairie perfection.

New Anise + Juniper Colette Patterns are Here!

Two new patterns are here from Colette!

Perfect for your fall/winter handmade wardrobe, the Anise pattern is a classic and ladylike double-breasted jacket with a cozy collar.

We think these wools would suit this pattern perfectly!

The Juniper pants have a wide leg and tailored hip--a classic fit for classy ladies!

We think the Essex cotton/linens, the hemp ticking or hemp denims would be lovely for Juniper.

Happy sewing!

Amber & Emily and Their New Colette Iris Shorts!

Short shorts alert!

Emily and I just finished sewing up some new Iris shorts by Colette--they were so quick to make!

To be honest, I was a little nervous because this was the first time I have sewn a garment with legs, but I should have known that Colette would walk me through it and make it so easy!

I used a hemp/organic cotton ticking from Pickering and got a little crazy with the pockets, using a super adorbz little sewing notions print from Anna Griffin. I cut my Iris out with horizontal stripes, taking care to line up the stripes when I cut the pieces and sewed the seams. I love the way they turned out!

Emily's Iris shorts turned out fantastic! She used a hemp denim from Pickering and left out the pockets, so she could sew flat felled seams on the front. So cute!

Summertime, we're ready!

New! Hemp Goodness--Denim, Jersey, Webbing and More!

Hemp is here!

Check out the new hemp wovens: a denim and a ticking, both 55% hemp/45% organic cotton, and on the right a tweedy 55% hemp/45% recycled cotton, the bits of recycled cotton adding a touch of color and texture. I've never seen a lovelier denim than this--oh my goodness, it's pretty. We are imagining crisp denim dresses for summer, hemp ticking sailor blouses, and tweedy summer bicycling shorts. This fabric makes us swoon.

Hemp is perfect for summer--it is cooler than cotton and naturally antibacterial so it will keep you cool and fresh on summer days. We also have a new hemp/organic cotton jersey, perfect for tees and soft baby items.

100% Hemp cotton webbing is here, too. It is super strong and works great for bag handles, belts and dog leashes.

Hooray for hemp!
